“Explain like I’m five.”

“Rewrite this, but make it sound smarter and less AI.”

“Create an image of…”

“Summarize this paragraph”

“Be honest… am I overthinking this?”

If any of these sound familiar, you can thank Geoffrey Hinton, the “Godfather of AI.” A computer scientist who pioneered neural networks and backpropagation, Hinton helped teach machines how to learn from their mistakes, which started the deep-learning revolution behind today’s AI systems, including ChatGPT.

But Hinton’s influence doesn’t stop at building AI. In recent years, he’s also become one of its most outspoken critics. He has warned about the speed at which AI is evolving, the lack of global regulation, and the possibility of systems becoming more capable than we can safely control. Hinton has raised concerns about misinformation, job displacement, and the long-term risks of creating machines that may eventually surpass human intelligence.

A pioneer of the revolution, and now one of its loudest voices for caution.
